Chapter 4 (p60) Summary
© 1996, P V Dutton

  1. As a rule, always remain calm with your children (if you are becoming angry you have left it too late) but as soon as children become even slightly aggressive, disobedient or if they misbehave they go immediately to their own bedroom (or agreed area).
  2. Children must stay in their own rooms (without you speaking to them) until they have been quiet for 10 minutes (5 minutes for under-fives).
  3. After the noise and the 10 minute 'quiet period' are over, tell the children that they are good for being quiet and that they may come out of their room when they are ready.
  4. All should be forgotten and forgiven when the children return from their room. Be pleasant and reward quiet behaviour by saying you are pleased with them.
  5. If children become difficult or noisy on their return, send them straight back into their room (or area). Follow these instructions again from the beginning and repeat the process as often as necessary.
  6. Remember that this system is designed to cut out all arguments. It requires that you put your children to their room (or area) a lot more often and more quickly than you expect. The more often (and sooner) you do this, the faster children learn and the less anyone becomes upset. As with driving practice, more lessons create more confidence, and the earlier the test is passed.
